UTI vs STI: How Symptoms Can Overlap

Burning, frequency, and pelvic discomfort can occur with both — evaluation and testing clarify the cause.

Urinary tract infections and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can share symptoms such as burning with urination, pelvic discomfort, and unusual discharge.

UTI pattern: Strong urgency and frequency, bladder pressure, cloudy urine. Often no new discharge unless complicated.

STI pattern: Discharge, genital sores, pelvic pain, or bleeding between periods may suggest an STI. Some STIs cause minimal symptoms.

When both are considered: New symptoms after sexual contact, discharge with urinary symptoms, or symptoms not improving after UTI treatment may warrant STI testing.

Confidential care: NeuMed offers sexual health evaluation and STI testing with privacy respected. Testing recommendations depend on your history and exam.

Do not delay care: Untreated STIs and UTIs both need appropriate treatment. Walk in or save your spot online at Houston-area clinics.
