STD vs UTI: Why Symptoms Can Overlap

Burning, frequency, and pelvic discomfort can occur with both — evaluation clarifies the cause.

Urinary burning and pelvic discomfort can come from a UTI or from STIs such as chlamydia and gonorrhea — sometimes both need to be considered.

UTI pattern: Strong urgency and frequency, bladder pressure, cloudy urine. Often no genital sores.

STI pattern: Discharge, bleeding between periods, genital sores, or pelvic pain — though many STIs have minimal or no symptoms.

When overlap is common: New sexual activity, discharge plus urinary symptoms, or UTI symptoms not improving after treatment.

Testing both: A provider may recommend urine testing for UTI and STI screening based on your history — not assuming one diagnosis.
