Overview
A urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when bacteria enter the urinary system and multiply, most often affecting the bladder (cystitis).
UTIs are very common, especially in women, but can affect anyone. Prompt evaluation helps confirm the diagnosis and start appropriate treatment.

Symptoms
Common UTI symptoms include:
- Burning or pain when urinating
- Frequent or urgent need to urinate, often in small amounts
- Cloudy, strong-smelling, or pink-tinged urine
- Pelvic pressure or lower abdominal discomfort
- Fatigue or feeling unwell
- Fever, chills, or back pain (may suggest kidney involvement)
Causes
Most UTIs are caused by bacteria — often E. coli from the digestive tract — entering the urethra and traveling upward.
Risk factors include female anatomy, sexual activity, certain birth control methods, menopause, urinary retention, and prior UTIs.
Men, children, and pregnant women with urinary symptoms should be evaluated promptly because complications or underlying causes may differ.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis typically involves reviewing symptoms and a urine test. A urinalysis can show signs of infection; a urine culture may be sent to identify the specific bacteria when needed.
Because UTI symptoms can overlap with yeast infections and STIs, your provider may recommend additional evaluation based on your history and exam.

Treatment
When a UTI is confirmed, antibiotics are typically prescribed. Take the full course as directed unless your provider advises otherwise.
Increase fluid intake to help flush bacteria. Over-the-counter pain relievers may help discomfort — ask your provider what is safe for you.
If symptoms do not improve within a few days of starting treatment, follow up with your provider.
