UTI vs Yeast Infection: What's the Difference?

Burning and discomfort can stem from either — learn how symptoms differ and why testing matters.

UTIs and yeast infections can both cause burning and discomfort, but they have different causes and typical symptom patterns.

UTI clues: Burning with urination, frequent urgent urination in small amounts, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, pelvic pressure. Itching is less prominent.

Yeast infection clues: Intense vaginal itching, thick white discharge, redness and irritation of the vulva. Burning may occur but urgency and frequency are less typical.

Why not self-diagnose: Symptoms overlap, and treating the wrong condition delays relief. A provider can evaluate and test when needed.

Treatment differs: UTIs usually need antibiotics; yeast infections need antifungal medication. Using the wrong treatment will not resolve symptoms.
