Sprain vs Fracture: How Can You Tell?
Some clues suggest imaging — but only X-ray can confirm a fracture.
Sprains and fractures can look similar — pain, swelling, and bruising occur with both. You cannot reliably tell them apart without evaluation.
Clues that imaging may be needed: Inability to bear weight, pain directly over a bone, significant deformity, or severe swelling after an ankle or wrist injury.
Sprain pattern: Pain more localized to ligaments, ability to bear some weight with discomfort, less bony tenderness — though overlap is common.
Possible fracture pattern: Severe pain with weight-bearing, point tenderness over bone, audible pop or crack at injury — but these are not definitive without X-ray.
Why X-ray matters: Treatment differs. Fractures may need splinting, casting, or orthopedic follow-up. Sprains focus on RICE, bracing, and gradual return.
NeuMed evaluation: On-site X-ray at select locations when clinically appropriate. Walk in after an injury.
