Normal Testosterone vs. Low Testosterone: What Do Lab Results Mean?

Understanding reference ranges, repeat testing, and why context matters.

Testosterone lab results are reported with reference ranges that vary slightly by laboratory. "Normal" depends on the lab's assay and your age.

Total vs free testosterone: Most testosterone is bound to proteins. Total testosterone measures overall level; free testosterone measures the unbound fraction active in tissues. Both may be relevant depending on symptoms.

Repeat testing: Because testosterone fluctuates daily and with illness, guidelines often recommend confirming low results on a separate morning before diagnosing hypogonadism.

Symptoms plus labs: Treatment decisions combine lab values with symptoms and exclusion of other causes — not numbers alone.

NeuMed evaluation: Men's health consultations interpret labs alongside your history. See our Low Testosterone condition guide for more detail.
