Low Testosterone
Low testosterone (hypogonadism) can affect energy, mood, and sexual health. Learn symptoms, how it is evaluated with lab testing, and when to speak with a NeuMed provider in Houston.
Overview
Testosterone is a hormone that plays important roles in energy, muscle mass, bone density, mood, libido, and red blood cell production in men.
Low testosterone — also called hypogonadism or "low T" — means testosterone levels fall below the normal range for your age, confirmed by blood testing. Symptoms alone cannot diagnose low testosterone.
NeuMed offers men's health evaluation and lab testing at Houston-area clinics, including Functional Health Lab panels with testosterone markers.
Symptoms
Symptoms associated with low testosterone may include — but overlap with many other conditions:
- Persistent fatigue or low energy
- Reduced libido or sexual function
- Mood changes — irritability or low mood
- Difficulty concentrating
- Reduced muscle mass or strength
- Increased body fat
- Sleep disturbances
- Hot flashes (less common in men)
Causes
Primary hypogonadism involves testicular failure to produce adequate testosterone. Secondary hypogonadism involves signaling problems from the brain (pituitary/hypothalamus).
Contributing factors may include aging, obesity, certain medications, chronic illness, sleep apnea, and pituitary disorders. Many symptoms overlap with normal aging, stress, depression, thyroid disease, and poor sleep — which is why lab confirmation matters.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis requires blood testing — typically total testosterone measured on more than one occasion, often in the morning when levels peak. Free testosterone may be measured when indicated.
A provider also reviews symptoms, physical exam findings, and conditions that mimic low testosterone. NeuMed's Men's Total Health lab panel includes testosterone (total, free, direct), LH, FSH, and PSA among other markers.
Symptoms alone do not confirm low testosterone. Treating based on symptoms without labs is not appropriate medical practice.
Treatment
When low testosterone is confirmed and symptomatic, treatment options may include testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), enclomiphene, HCG in select cases, or addressing underlying causes such as obesity or sleep apnea.
Treatment selection depends on clinical evaluation — including fertility goals, age, comorbidities, and preference. No single approach fits every patient.
Monitoring: Therapy requires follow-up labs and symptom assessment. Potential risks include erythrocytosis, fertility effects, and prostate monitoring per guidelines.
Fertility consideration: TRT can suppress natural sperm production. Men planning future fertility should discuss enclomiphene or HCG options with their provider.
Can urgent care treat low testosterone?
Low testosterone evaluation is appropriate in a men's health or wellness clinic setting — not typically urgent care unless you have acute symptoms requiring emergency evaluation.
Schedule a men's health consultation at NeuMed to discuss symptoms, lab testing, and whether further evaluation is warranted.
When to seek emergency care
Seek emergency care for sudden severe testicular pain, chest pain, shortness of breath, or signs of stroke — not for gradual fatigue or libido changes alone.
FAQs
Can symptoms alone diagnose low testosterone?
No. Blood testing on appropriate occasions is required to confirm low testosterone. Many symptoms overlap with other conditions.
Does NeuMed offer testosterone testing?
Yes. Men's health consultations and Functional Health Lab panels include testosterone and related hormone markers when appropriate.
Is low testosterone the same as normal aging?
Testosterone gradually declines with age, but clinically low levels are defined by lab criteria and symptoms — not age alone. Evaluation helps distinguish treatable hypogonadism from other causes of fatigue and low libido.
