Low Testosterone vs. Normal Aging

How gradual age-related decline differs from clinically low testosterone.

Testosterone levels gradually decline with age — roughly 1% per year after peak adult levels. This is a normal physiologic change.

Clinically low testosterone (hypogonadism) is defined by lab criteria and compatible symptoms — not by age alone. Not every older man needs or benefits from treatment.

Overlap: Fatigue, reduced libido, and mood changes occur in both aging and hypogonadism. Lab testing and clinical evaluation distinguish treatable hypogonadism from other causes.

Treatment is individualized: Benefits and risks of therapy depend on your health profile, fertility goals, and symptom burden. There is no universal recommendation for all men over a certain age.

Discuss with a provider: NeuMed men's health consultations help determine whether evaluation is appropriate for you.
