How Long Does the Flu Usually Last?

Typical flu timeline from onset to recovery, and when lingering symptoms warrant a visit.

Most people with influenza feel their worst for about 3 to 7 days, though fatigue and cough can linger longer.

Day 1–3: Symptoms often come on quickly — fever, chills, body aches, headache, and fatigue. This is usually when people feel most ill.

Day 4–7: Fever and body aches often improve, but cough, congestion, and tiredness may continue. Rest and fluids remain important.

Week 2+: Some people feel back to normal within a week; others have a persistent cough or fatigue for two weeks or more. Gradual improvement is typical.

When to seek care: Consider urgent care if fever lasts more than three days, symptoms worsen after improving, breathing is difficult, or you are in a higher-risk group. Early evaluation may also help with antiviral options when appropriate.

Prevention: Annual flu vaccination reduces risk and severity. NeuMed offers flu shots during flu season — walk in or save your spot online.
