How Long Does a Sprain Take to Heal?
Recovery timelines vary by severity — mild to moderate sprain guidance.
Sprain healing time depends on which ligament is injured and how severe the tear is.
Mild (Grade I): Microscopic tearing with minimal instability. Often 1–3 weeks with RICE and gradual return to activity.
Moderate (Grade II): Partial ligament tear with more swelling and bruising. May take 3–6 weeks; bracing and rehab exercises help.
Severe (Grade III): Complete tear with significant instability. May need months and formal physical therapy; some cases need specialist evaluation.
When healing stalls: Persistent swelling, inability to bear weight after expected improvement, or recurrent sprains warrant re-evaluation.
NeuMed: Initial injury evaluation, X-ray when needed, and guidance on recovery timelines for Houston patients.
