RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) is a common respiratory virus. Most people recover in a week or two, but RSV can cause more serious illness in infants, young children, and some older adults.
RSV symptoms overlap with colds and flu, so evaluation helps determine the cause and appropriate care — especially in children.

Symptoms
RSV symptoms are often mild and cold-like. They may include:
- Runny nose and congestion
- Cough

Causes
RSV spreads through respiratory droplets and contact with contaminated surfaces — similar to colds and flu.
Outbreaks are common in fall, winter, and spring. Infants and toddlers in daycare or with school-age siblings may have higher exposure.
Reinfection is possible throughout life; later infections are often milder than the first.
Diagnosis

Treatment

Most children and adults recover at home. Hospital care may be needed for severe breathing difficulty or dehydration — that is ER-level care, not typical urgent care.
Preventive monoclonal antibody products exist for certain high-risk infants — discuss prevention with your pediatrician if your child qualifies.
