Ear Infection

Ear infections are common — especially in children. Learn types, symptoms, treatment options, and when to visit NeuMed urgent care in Houston.

Overview

An ear infection occurs when the middle ear (behind the eardrum) or outer ear canal becomes inflamed, often due to bacteria or viruses.

Ear infections are especially common in young children because of anatomy and developing immune systems, but adults get them too.

NeuMed offers walk-in ear infection evaluation at Houston-area clinics, including pediatric urgent care for children 6 months and older.

Symptoms

Symptoms vary by age and infection type. Common signs include:

  • Ear pain — often worse when lying down
  • Fever
  • Fluid drainage from the ear
  • Hearing changes or muffled hearing
  • Irritability, poor sleep, or tugging at the ear (children)
  • Balance problems in some cases

Causes

Middle ear infections (otitis media) often follow colds or congestion when fluid builds behind the eardrum and bacteria or viruses multiply.

Swimmer's ear (otitis externa) affects the outer ear canal — often after water exposure or minor skin injury in the canal.

Risk factors in children include age under 3, group child care, bottle feeding while lying down, and exposure to secondhand smoke.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis involves reviewing symptoms and examining the ear with an otoscope. The provider looks for redness, bulging of the eardrum, fluid, or canal inflammation.

Most ear infections do not require imaging. Additional evaluation may be needed if symptoms recur frequently or do not improve.

Treatment

Treatment depends on age, severity, and whether the infection is middle ear or outer ear.

Watchful waiting: Many middle ear infections in older children and adults improve on their own. Pain management and monitoring may be appropriate.

Antibiotics: Prescribed when clinically indicated — especially for young children, severe symptoms, or certain exam findings.

Ear drops: Outer ear infections (swimmer's ear) often need prescription ear drops rather than oral antibiotics.

Pain relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers as appropriate for age — ask your provider for guidance with children.

Can urgent care treat ear infection?

Urgent care is appropriate for ear pain with fever, significant discomfort, drainage, or concerns in children — without emergency warning signs.

NeuMed pediatric and adult providers examine ears and discuss treatment during walk-in visits. Save your spot online or walk in.

When to seek emergency care

Seek emergency care for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness with vomiting, swelling behind the ear, or signs of meningitis (stiff neck, severe headache, confusion).

FAQs

How do you know if you have an ear infection?

Common signs include ear pain (especially when lying down), fever, fluid drainage, hearing changes, and fussiness in young children. A provider examines the ear to confirm.

Can urgent care treat an ear infection?

Yes. Urgent care can evaluate ear pain, examine the ear, and discuss antibiotics or supportive care when clinically appropriate.

Do all ear infections need antibiotics?

Not always. Many ear infections improve on their own. Your provider considers age, severity, and exam findings when deciding on antibiotics.
