Ear Pain Without an Infection: Possible Causes
Not all ear pain is an infection — sinus pressure, TMJ, and referred throat pain are common.
Ear pain does not always mean infection. The ear shares nerve pathways with the jaw, throat, and sinuses — pain can be referred from nearby areas.
Sinus congestion: Pressure from sinus infection can cause ear fullness and discomfort without a true ear infection.
Sore throat and strep: Throat inflammation sometimes causes referred ear pain, especially when swallowing.
TMJ disorders: Jaw clenching, grinding, or joint problems can cause ear-area pain and clicking.
Earwax: Significant buildup can cause pressure and muffled hearing — do not insert objects into the ear canal.
When to get checked: Persistent or severe pain deserves evaluation to confirm the cause. NeuMed can examine ears, throat, and related structures during a walk-in visit.
