When Should You Get Tested for an STD?

Routine screening, new partners, symptoms, and exposure — when testing makes sense.

STD (STI) testing is recommended based on age, risk factors, symptoms, and exposure — not only when you feel sick.

Routine screening: CDC guidelines recommend periodic screening for certain infections (such as chlamydia and gonorrhea) for sexually active women under 25 and others at increased risk.

New or multiple partners: Testing before stopping condoms with a new partner helps protect both people.

Symptoms: Discharge, genital sores, burning with urination, pelvic pain, or rash warrant prompt evaluation — even if mild.

Known exposure: If a partner was diagnosed with an STI, testing is recommended even without symptoms.

NeuMed sexual health: Confidential walk-in evaluation and testing at Houston-area clinics. Save your spot online or walk in.
