What Happens During an STD Test?
Urine, blood, swab, and exam — what to expect at a sexual health visit.
STI testing is straightforward. Your visit typically includes a private conversation, optional exam, and sample collection based on what is being tested.
History: A provider asks about symptoms, partners, and risk factors — answer honestly so testing is appropriate.
Urine tests: Common for chlamydia and gonorrhea. You may be asked to hold urine briefly before collection.
Blood tests: Used for HIV, syphilis, and sometimes hepatitis. A small blood draw is taken.
Swabs: Throat, rectal, or genital swabs may be used depending on exposure sites and symptoms.
Physical exam: When indicated, a brief exam checks for sores, discharge, or tenderness.
After the visit: Results timing varies. Follow up as directed — and return sooner if symptoms develop.
