Urgent Care vs. ER in Houston: Where Should You Go?
Not every illness or injury needs the emergency room. Learn when Houston urgent care is the right choice — and when to call 911.
In Houston, you have options when you need care quickly: urgent care, the emergency room, or in some cases telehealth. Choosing the right setting saves time and helps emergency departments focus on true emergencies.
Urgent care fits: Minor fractures after imaging evaluation, sprains and strains, flu and strep symptoms, ear and sinus infections, UTIs, minor cuts needing stitches, rashes, mild allergic reactions without breathing difficulty, and school or work physicals.
Go to the ER or call 911 for: Chest pain, difficulty breathing, stroke symptoms (facial drooping, arm weakness, speech changes), severe bleeding, head injury with confusion or vomiting, seizures, signs of sepsis, pregnancy complications, or any life-threatening condition.
Houston traffic matters: NeuMed clinics in the Heights, Montrose, Spring Branch, Galleria area, and Washington Corridor offer extended hours and on-site X-ray and labs — often a faster path than an ER for non-emergencies.
Cost and wait times: Urgent care visits are typically shorter and lower cost than ER visits for appropriate conditions. Insurance copays differ — check your plan.
