Urgent Care vs ER for a Broken Bone

Many minor fractures can start at urgent care — severe trauma needs the ER.

Not every broken bone requires an emergency room — but some injuries always do.

Urgent care fits: Suspected minor fractures of fingers, toes, wrist, or ankle; need for X-ray and splinting; stable patients without severe deformity.

ER is needed for: Open fractures (bone through skin), severe deformity, neurovascular compromise (numbness, pale limb), hip or femur fractures, spine injuries, and multi-system trauma.

What urgent care provides: Exam, X-ray when appropriate, splinting, pain management, and referral to orthopedics for follow-up.

Pediatric note: Children's fractures may need specialist follow-up even when initially splinted at urgent care.

NeuMed injury care: Walk-in evaluation at Houston clinics — we help you understand next steps based on your injury.
