Strep Throat vs. Flu: What's the Difference?
Fever, body aches, and sore throat can appear in both illnesses. Learn how symptoms may differ and why testing helps.
Strep throat and influenza (flu) are different illnesses, but both can cause fever and throat pain — especially during respiratory season.
Symptom differences: Flu often causes sudden fever, body aches, fatigue, headache, and sometimes cough or congestion. Strep more typically causes severe sore throat, pain when swallowing, and swollen neck lymph nodes, often with less cough.
Fever: Both can cause fever. High fever with severe body aches is common with flu. Strep may cause fever with intense throat pain as the dominant symptom.
Cough and congestion: Cough, runny nose, and congestion are more typical of flu and other viral illnesses. Strep may occur with little or no cough, though overlap exists.
Body aches: Widespread muscle and body aches are hallmark flu symptoms. Strep may cause headache or stomach discomfort, especially in children, but whole-body achiness is more characteristic of flu.
Sore throat: Both can cause throat pain. With strep, throat pain is often the primary complaint and may feel severe quickly.
Testing: Rapid strep and flu tests can be performed during an urgent care visit when appropriate. Testing helps guide treatment — antibiotics for strep, and antiviral medication for flu only when started early and clinically indicated.
Co-infection: It is possible to have more than one illness, though this is not common. Your provider interprets symptoms and tests together.
When to seek care: Consider evaluation if symptoms are significant, persist beyond a few days, or you are unsure whether ER care is needed. NeuMed offers cold, flu, and strep evaluation with on-site testing at Houston clinics.
