Can IV Fluids Help With Dehydration?

When IV rehydration may be appropriate — and when urgent or emergency care is needed.

Yes — IV fluids are a standard medical treatment for moderate dehydration when oral rehydration is insufficient or not tolerated.

Mild dehydration: Often managed with oral electrolyte solutions and rest. IV is usually not necessary.

Moderate dehydration: May benefit from IV fluids when vomiting, diarrhea, or heat illness limits oral intake. Urgent care can evaluate and administer IV fluids when clinically appropriate.

Severe dehydration: Confusion, rapid heart rate, very low urine output, or dizziness with standing may need emergency care.

NeuMed options: IV therapy suites for elective hydration; urgent care for illness-related dehydration evaluation. See /conditions/dehydration/ and /services/cold-flu-treatment/ for related urgent care resources.
