Upper Respiratory Infections

We can diagnose and help get you feeling better, fast.

What are Upper Respiratory Infections?

Upper respiratory infections are contagious infections that affect the throat, nose, lungs, and sinuses caused by viruses and bacteria. They are one of the most common reasons for missed days at work, school, and college. While upper respiratory infections can occur at any time, they tend to be more common during fall and winter.

If a runny nose, throat ache, or sinus infection makes you feel unwell, please call our experienced providers near you for diagnosis and treatment.

Causes of Upper Respiratory Infection

Although viruses are the most common causes of upper respiratory infections, they can also be caused by bacteria. Upper respiratory infections affect the organs located in the upper airway.

Examples of upper respiratory infections:

  • Sinusitis: Infection of the sinuses (there are four sinuses located near the nasal cavity)
  • Rhinitis: Swelling of the nasal cavity
  • Common colds: Inflammation of the nasal cavity, pharynx, or tonsils
  • Laryngitis: Inflammation of the larynx or voice box
  • Tracheitis: Inflammation of the trachea or windpipe that runs down to the lungs

Symptoms of Upper Respiratory Infections

They are usually contagious and can be passed on through droplets spread by sneezing or coughing. Common symptoms of upper respiratory infection near you include:

  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Nasal discharge
  • Nasal congestion
  • Scratchy, sore throat
  • Headaches and body aches
  • Fatigue and mild to moderate fever
